What is the difference between a process that is in vitro versus in vivo? Explain. According to your findings, is cloning an in vitro or an vivo process? Is PCR an in vitro or an in vivo process?
Solution
In-vitro means process done outside cell say in a test tube and, in-vivo means process occuring inside a living cell.
Now cloning involves digesting vectors with a restriction enzyme and adding a suitable insert into a vector; that part of it is done in a test tube hence gene cloning is an in-vitro process but when we are cloning the gene in an expression vector the expression is done in a live cell after transformation of competant cells with a plasmid/vector, hence gene expression of a clone is an in-vivo process.
Now comming to PCR
Since PCR is done in small tubes inside a thermo cycler and not inside a live cell hence PCR amplification of a gene is an in-vitro process
