List the following for both Selaginellaceae( Heterosporous plant) and Cycadophyta( Seed plant): Sporangia location, sporangia type, and gametophyte location.
Solution
Selaginellaceae are terrestrial or heterosporous, vascular plants comprising a single fenus & about 700 species. The fertile axis of Selaginella bears two kinds of sporangia i.e. Megasporangia & Microsporangia. Megasporangia produce four large megaspores which in return give rise to female gametophyte ( The stage which goes alteration of generations in the life cycle of plants is called gametophyte. ) which is confined within the megaspore wall.
Cycadophyta are seed-producing dioecious (which means male & female reproductive organs are on separate plants) plants. They have 2 types of sporangia. Megasporophylls (modified leaves) are the lateral organs of seed strobili bearing several ovules. Microsporophylls on pollen strobili having abaxial microsporangia. Microsporangiate & Megasporangiate sporophytes of cycads produce male & female gametophytes respectively.
