what would be the probable result of a person receiving an acute dose of 16,000 rem of penetrating radiation to the head and neck?
Solution
The dose of 16000 rem or 160,000 mSv represnets a very highly ionizing and lethal dose of radiation. Such type of radiation are of immediate effect and cause suddent burning of the tissue of the skin causing permanent damage. These radiations are noted only under extra-terrestrial cosmic burns or nuclear explosions. Owing to their high ioninzation and heat content, such radiation will cause immediate effect leading to permanent damage to brain cells and spinal cord promoting irresponsiveness to stiumulus. This will be an immediate condition of brain death and the person will die due to ionizaiton damage to the neuronal cells and the tissues above it.
Clinically, such exposures are termed as acute radiation syndromes and due to very high intensity of radiation, irrepairable damage of the tissue takes place.
