The action that i as an engineer will take is that i will act as per my morals and principles and will not let the company ignore the vapor/aerosal leak. The company wants to take a risk by overlooking this leak in order to protect its topline (revenue). This is ethically wrong. The liquid is organic caustic and can be dangerous to the nearby small community as it can burn an corrode organic tissue. Thus, i will take action within my power to convince the board and the COO to stop the plant for repairs. If the company is not willing to do so, then i will act as a whistleblower and expose this unethical approach of the company. I will take this action, irrespective of the fact, whether the leak becomes noticeable to the community or whether the community is not aware of the leak. Under both situations there is a danger to the community from the caustic property of the liquid.
The AICHE ethics issues that are involved are: (i) to be honest and impartial - by ignoring the situation, the engineer will be compromising with his morals. (ii) to strive to increase the prestige of the engineering profession - by ignoring the situation, the engineer will decrease the prestige of his profession. (iii) use their skill for the enhancement of human welfare - in this case, human welfare will be put at risk if the issue is ignored to safeguard the revenues.
