Mr. Sinks has undergone aortic valve repair and has orders for heparin at 1000 units/h. The concentration is heparin 25,000 units in 250 mL of 0.9% NS. How many milliliters per hour should the IV pump be programmed for?

Solution

Here we have given that Mr. Sinks has orders at 1000 units for 1 hor.

Now 25000 units requires =250 ml

so 1 unit requires =250/25000 ml = 1/100 ml = 0.01 ml

so 1000 units per hour requires = 1000 x 0.01 = 10 ml

So 10 mililiters per hour should the IV pump be programmed for.
