Solution
Doubling up - 1:1:1: spelling principle -
We normally double the last consonant when adding the following vowel suffixes : ing/er/ed/ est/ ish/en/ ery/ y.
Hence words of 1 syllable finishing in 1 vowel plus 1 consonant, double the last letter previous to a vowel suffix.
We do not double up the last consonant in case of w/ x / y
We also double up few words which are greater than 1 syllable if the last syllable is being stressed.
For e.g.- prefer (preFER) : preferred or preferring( not ‘preference’)
