8 Points 11. Based on lecture notes and classroom discussions identify &label; the Lewis acid, Bronsted-Lowry acid, Lewis base or Bronsted-Lowry base for the reactions below. H:F + A1F3
Solution
The definition of a Bronsted Lowry acid is defined as a chemical entity that is proton donor. If it accepts a proton donor then it will be known as Bronsted Lowry base.
Also Lewis base is a compound which can donate a pair of an electron to an accepting molecule.
So according to these definitions, we can see that in the first reaction HF is donating a proton so it will be Bronsted Lowry acid and AlF3 is accepting a proton so it will be Bronsted Lowry base.
In the second reaction, AlF3 is accepting F- is donating its electrons to AlF3 so F- is a Lewis base and AlF3 will be termed as a Lewis base.
