It is true that individuals take different risk levels and can grade themselves as risk takers, risk avoiders and risk neutrals.
The example of risk avoider: It came at the time of selection of electives in my course. I opted for the established elective subjects that were popular and offering job opportunities. New elective subjects were emerging and opportunities could come out after a few years. So, I thought to go with the popular elective subjects and became risk avoider.
The example of risk taker: It came when I get the opportunity to work with new organization having very good job profile. But, for this, I had to leave the existing and established organization of work. I took the opportunity as risk to join the new firm and became the risk taker.
The example of risk neutral: I faced a scenario where an important decision was to be taken and managers were on leave. In this scenario, I had a telephonic conversation with the manager and took the decision on his behalf to prevent the unpleasant scenario. So, I took the decision after consultation with the manager and became the risk neutral.
My risk level was always balanced and took the calculated risk to move ahead in my career except one scenario where I should have opted for one of new and emerging electives. Today, there is a huge demand for the experts with the skills offered by those new electives. So, before taking any risk, it is important to forecast the future, analyze the possible outcome and take the risk. The risk is worth taking if it offers good opportunities or scope in the future.
Today, my only regret (if any) is not going with the new electives as I can understand on the basis of my knowledge, today. May be, I could not judge the future on the basis of my knowledge in school days or I lacked the suitable guidance.
