In your own words how do you expect photosynthesis to react

In your own words, how do you expect photosynthesis to react in each color during red, blue and green? Does it increase or decrease. Why or why not the rate of photosynthesis is being affected by the red, blue and green light. Thank you so much.

Solution

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants absorb sunlight in the presence of chlorophyll, and utilize carbon dioxide and water to generate glucose and oxygen. It has been shown experimentally, that the rate of photosynthesis.i.e. the rate of the depletion of carbon dioxide and evolution of oxygen, is affected by the presence of light of different colors.

The pigment due to which the leaves and the plants appear green is called chlorophyll. This pigment is present in the organelle called chloroplast and is responsible for absorption of light of suitable wavelength. Chlorophyll absorbs all the components of the white light but reflects green and yellow light, hence the green-yellow appearance of the leaves.

The components of the chlorophyll pigment, chlorophyll-a, and chlorophyll-b absorb red light wavelength and blue light wavelength respectively. Neither of these two components absorbs green wavelength.

Hence, the rate of photosynthesis is maximum in red and blue light and minimum in the presence of green light.
