Suppose coal sells for 3650 per ton What is the cost of coal

Suppose coal sells for $36.50 per ton. What is the cost of coal in terms of cents per kilowatt-hour (¢/kWh)?

Solution

Given that Coal sells at $36.50 per ton

i.e. $36.50 per 907 Kg ( since1ton == 907 Kg)

Therefore 1 kg coal is $(36.50/907)=$0.04

or 1 kg coal = ¢4

now,

The Energy density of the coal is 6.67 kW·h/kg.

Therefore cost of coal in terms of cents per kilowatt-hour = (¢4)/ (6.67 kW·h/kg.)

                                                                                 = 0.599 ¢/kWh
