Find the mass of silver chloride obtained by mixing 100 mL o
Find the mass of silver chloride obtained by mixing 10.0 mL of 0.1M AgNO3 and 20.0 mL of 0.05M sodium chloride?
Solution
moles of AgNO3 taken = 0.01 L x 0.1 mol / L = 0.001 mol
moles of NaCl taken = 0.02 L x 0.05 mol / L = 0.001 mol
now the balanced reaction is given by
AgNO3 + NaCl --> AgCl + NaNO3
see that AgNO3 and NaCl react in 1 : 1 molar ratio
so
0.001 mol AgNO3 will react with 0.001 mol NaCl
no limting reagent or nothing is in excess
now
from the balanced reaction
moles of AgCl formed = 0.001 mol AgNO3 x 1 mol AgCl / 1 mol AgNO3
moles of AgCl formed = 0.001 mol
now
mass of AgCl = moles x molar mass
mass of AgCl formed = 0.001 mol x 143.32 g/mol
mass of AgCl formed = 0.14232 g
so
0.14232 grams of silver chloride is obtained
