List the following in order of increasing boiling point temp
List the following in order of increasing boiling point temperature.
N2, CH3CH2OH ,CH3OCH3
How do you know when there is hydrogen bonding?
Also please explain how you found the answer. Thanks in advance!
Solution
CH3CH2OH > CH3OCH3 > N2
stronger the intermolecular forces higher the boiling points.
alcohol has strong hydrogen bonding so highest boiling point.
ether has dipole-dipole interaction which is weaker compared to hydrogen bonding so second highest boiling point.
N2 have only london-dispersion forces which are weakest so lowest boiling point.
