What is the reticular formation? Where is it located, and why is it important?
Solution
The reticular formation consists of a group of nuclei clusters that are found in the brain stem. These clusters comprise of alarge number of nerves, that are connected to each other in an intricate network. There are four main clusters - the dorsal tegmental nuclei found in the medulla, the central tegmental nuclei located in the pons, the central nuclei and the inferior nuclei, both located in the medulla. It is difficult to assign a certain part of the brain as the location of the reticular formation because of its complexity. It is therefore broadly classified into 3 sections- the raphe nuclei, the magnocellular red nucleus and parvocellular reticular nucleus. There are two patterns in the reticular formation- the ascending formation and the descendng formation. The ascending formation has nerves which regulate the body\'s sleep pattern, while the descending pattern controls body posture and autonomic nervous systems.
