Imagine shining a beam of red light on a surface. Then imagine changing the beam in each of the following ways. Describe how the given property changes - or if it does not change. 1. a. If the light stays the same color, but gets brighter, how does the amplitude of the light change? (2 pts) b. If the light shifts from red to blue, how does the wavelength of the light change? (2 pts) If the light stays the same color, but gets dimmer, how does the energy of each individual photon of the light change? (2 pts) c.

Solution

a) The brightness of the light increase with increase in amplitude /intensity . The increase in amplitude increase the number of photons released and hence light become more bright .

b) As we know red colour has high wavelength than blue colour (can also be observed from VIBGYOR ) . This means wavelength of light decreases when light changes from red to Blue.

c) Colour of light depends on the wavelength /frequency and hence on energy . If colour of light remain same this means energy/wavelength /frequently didn\'t change. When the light gets dimmer this means amplitude /intensity change not the wavelength . So,

Energy of photons of light don\'t change .
