Prefix is the first part of a medical word. If prefix is not present, the combining form is the first part. Suffix is the terminal part of a medical word, which starts with hyphen. Combining form provide the basic for a medical word and it connects the prefix and suffix.

For example, in the word “peri-cardi/o-itis,” peri- prefix, cardio/o – combining form, and –itis – suffix.

The combining form “cardi/o- means heart.” The suffix “–megaly” means enlargement. Thus, the term cardiomegaly refers to enlargement of the heart, which indicates a diseased condition of heart.
