The pole is a hollow cylinder with the cross section shown below.

The pole is fabricated from AISI 2024 T4 aluminum.

The mast is 8 feet tall and is bolted into a concrete pad.

The the light at the top of the pole has a mass of 1.2 slugs. It is mounted so that its center

of mass is directly above the axis of the support tube.

The bird has a large mass of 37 slugs. The center of mass of the bird is

also directly above the axis of the support tube.

Will the weight of the bird cause the pole to buckle?

Solution

The pole will not buckle. Since, the hollow mast was constructed using AISI 2024 T4 Aluminium with the thickness of 0.1 feet (outer dia - Inner dia) can withstand the birds weight of 37 slugs.

Note: AISI 2024 T4 Aluminium is a 2000 series Aluminium alloy which has high stiffness and is mainly used in Aerospace fittings and gears and shafts.
