1 Which method of displaying molecules in Spartan most close

1. Which method of displaying molecules in Spartan most closely represents the true geometric shape of molecules? Explain your answer. Draw Lewis structures for the molecules in Parts A and D. Explain why the bond angles in water are not the same as the bond angles in carbon 2. 3. tetrachloride. 4. Knowing that \"like dissolves like\", determine which molecules in parts A and D would most likely be soluble in water. (hint: look at dipole moments) Which of the following is the highest energy water vibration? a.) asymmetric stretch b.) bending c.) symmetric stretch s. What is the relationship between bond length and bond order? (Bond order is the number of bonds holding two atoms together, thus a single bond is 1, a double is 2, etc.) 6.

Solution

3 Ans. In both H2O and CCl4, both the central atoms, that is O and C are sp3 hybridised. In case of H2O, two of the sp3 hybridised orbitals are occupied by two lone pairs of electrons on O. Two of the other sp3 hybrised ae occupied by the H atoms. The two lone pair of electrons undergo electronic repulsion because of which the H-O-H bond angle is less than those in normal tetrahedrals.

This electron repulsion is not observed in CCl4. Therefore, bond angles in H2O is lesser than those in CCl4.

5 Ans. The highest energy vibration in water molecule is the asymmetric stretching vibration.

6 Ans. Bond length is determined by the bond order. The higher the bond order, the stronger is the bond between two atoms and shorter is the bond length.

Therefore, higher bond order means shorter bond length.
