Some provincial governments conduct a daily lotteries. Studies have found that those who buy the lottery ticket are the poorest people in the province. Does this type of lottery satisfy the difference principle?
Solution
As per the difference principle any inequality that exists must be to benefit the disadvantaged. The above example of lottery does not satisfy the difference principle. Here comes in the term taxation where in the government taxes the winning amount by 40-50 percent and then reinvest into the better public schools, housing, hospitals, ect., all things that disproportionately aid the poor. If poorest are the one\'s who buys the lottery tickets then it would do no good.
