Product Safety Engineering:
1.What are some of the functions and responsibilities of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA)?
2.What are some of the functions and responsibilities of the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA)? Tell how concern for safety in the workplace ties in with product safety.
3.What authority does the CPSC have to correct a situation in which a marketed product is considered unreasonably dangerous?
Please do not write in a paper. Just write it here.
Solution
1. Functions of NHTSA: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been established under Highway Safety act 1970, under the US DoT, to carry out traffic safety. The major functions are:
i. To make policies for reducing motor vehicle crashes and related casulaties, injuries and economic losses.
ii. Safety defect investigation in motor vehicles and set them.
Responsibilities:
(a) Develop, set and enforce safety standards and regulations for motor vehicle safety.
(b) Issue and enforce fuel economy standards and help environmental protection agencies.
(c) Study of drivers and pedastrians behaviour toward highway safety and take appropriate measures to train and aware them.
2. OSHA: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been esatblished by US department of Labor in 1971. The major focus of this agency is to reduce injury and casulaties within industries. The major functions are listed as:
i. Set and enforce workplace health and safety regulations through extensive research.
ii. Set permissible exposure limits (PELs) for industires as a guideline to protect workers against hazardous elements.
iii. To offer training and explain the procedure and use of equipments to ensure complete safety.
Responsibilities:
a. To determine standard and safety requirements for industy and work areas.
b. To confirm that the industries comply/adhere with the provided guidelines and confirms all the safety standards.
Safety in workplace enforces a healty and stress free environment within and outside plant/ workplace. The workers performing specific tasks are free of any doubt of accidents due to inappropriate safety measures. Hence their prime focus will be towards that particular task on the machine and hence any chance of human error is minimized. This can be directly helpful in reducing faulty production and hence providing quality and product safety.
3. CPSC has the authority to devise safety standards and regulations according to which marketed product deemed to be unreasonably dangerous to public use. Firms are required to submit a report to CPSC for the proof or CAP (corrective action plans), in case of previous faulty product under section 15. Then based on the category of product, Product Racall Program is initiated by agency following a detail procedure.
