The particle in the figure below is an electron with a horizontal velocity of 7.0 times 10^5 m/s. It enters a region where an electric field is present and points in the -y direction, as shown. The electric field strength is 50 N/C. If the electron travels for 2 mu s, what is its velocity in the y-direction?

Solution

acceleration of the particle in y- direction = F/M = qE/m

= 1.6*10^-19*50 / (9.1*10^-31)

= 8.8*10^12 m/s2

inital speed in y- direction = 0

Vy = Uy + at

Vy = 0 + (8.8*10^12)*(2*10^-6)

= 1.76*10^7 m/s
