Indicate the points on the cross-sectionwhere the maximum shear and bendng stresses occur, respectively, and what equations are used to calculate them. Draw shear and bendng moment diagrams to scale, in terms of P b. Use the parallel axis theorem to calculate the second moment ofarea of the beam C Calculate the maximum load P before yielding occurs Indicate on the sketch where the maximum stress occurs in the beam. Also, locate and calculate the maximumdisplacement due to this load. d. Calculate the reactions and maximumbending stresses at CC

Solution

The beam shown in figure has a reaction force at A end due to vertical reaction while the beam shown in figure has a fixed end making it as a kind of cantilever beam having a center point reaction at B.

The amount of stresses in the beam 4 are more than in the beam 3 because the one end is fixed resulting into the three reactions:

1. Horizontal reaction

2. Vertical reaction

3. Moment about the end point

But in case of beam 3, only one reaction force is observed at A giving rise to low intensity of stress.
