Did I do this problem correct?
Testbank, Question 10C.023 A sample of a gas was isolated in a gas containment bulb on a manifold used in this type work. The volume of the bulb was 1.524 liters. The temperature was 28.40°C, and the manifold pressure was 637.6 torr. What volume would this gas sample occupy at STP? 1.412 L O 1.158 L 1.645 L 1.069 L 2.006 LSolution
First calculate mole of gas at given condition by using ideal gas equation
PV = nRT where, P = atm pressure= 637.6 torr = 0.8389 atm,
V = volume in Liter = 1.524 L
n = number of mole = ?
R = 0.08205L atm mol-1 K-1 =Proportionality constant = gas constant,
T = Temperature in K = 28.400C = 273.15+ 28.40 = 301.55 K
We can write ideal gas equation
n = PV/RT
Substitute the value
n = (0.8389X 1.524)/(0.08205 X 301.55) = 0.05167 mole
mole of gas = 0.05167 mole
now calculate volume of gas at STP by using ideal gas equation
at STP, P = 1 atm and T = 273.15 K
We know that PV = nRT
V = nRT/P
n = 0.05167 mole,
T = 273.15K,
P= 1 atm,
R = 0.08205 L atm mol-1 K-1 ( R = gas constant)
V = ?
Substitute these value in above equation.
V = (0.05167 X 0.08205 X 273.15)/1 = 1.158 L
Ans - 1.158 L
your answer is correct.
