I read an article about how things that were once shared openly between people are now being copyrighted and protected as one\'s own. It seems that people are marking their territory more and more. Why is that? Could it be that they want to make money off of their ideas? Or is it necessary when so many things are reachable by so many people now through the internet?

Think about medicine. It\'s always kind of irritated me that companies don\'t have to share their \"recipes\" with others, thus allowing for cheaper medications. But what is the reason for this? Just profit?

Solution

Well there can\'t be absolute judgment. Both sides of argument have merit. It is not possible to share recipe for medicine just not because of money involved but because in this case companies will get less benefits from their research which will ultimately decrease RandD. This will inturn affect health of millions of people who need new medicines

But at the same time it is also true that many economic agents now try as much as possible to get patents and copyright for as many things as possible. Infact companies like Apple had brought litigation against other companies just for protecting copyright of ideas. Now this is dangerous. When even things like ideas are copyrighted there is hardly any scope for others to research on the same topic. Ultimately usa courts rejected this idea as it is too dangerous. These companies and economic agents are misled by profit motive and demage creativity.
