An experiment to separate u235 the fissile isotope from u238

An experiment to separate u^235 the fissile isotope from u^238 is set up like a solids mass spectrometer as shown below. Uranium ions, generated by an are discharge ore accelerated by an ion gun. pass through a velocity into deflection region where they are separated and collected. What is the separation distance between the U^235and U^238 ions where they are collected ?

Solution

Here ,

let the velocity after the velocity selector is given as

v = E/B

v = 10^5/(0.70) m/s

v = 1.43 *10^5 m/s

Now , distance , d = v * delta m/(B * q)

d = 1.43 *10^5 * (3 * 1.67 *10^-27)/(0.90 * 1.602 *10^-19)

d = 0.00497 m = 4.97 mm

the seprature between U-235 and U238 is 4.97 mm
