A 0.5 m^2 sample of building material is placed in a window between a receiving room and source room. There is no significant sound transmission except through the sample. Average sound levels in the 1kHz octave band are 97 dB in the source room and 72 dB in the receiving room. The equivalent absorption area of the receiving room is 1.5 m^2. Find transmission loss (TL) and transmission coefficient for the sample at 1kHz.

Solution

Transmission loss = 10 log10 (wi/wt)

where wi = power of incident coming towards

wt= power of transmitted going away.

there fore transmission loss = 10 log10 (97/72)

= 12.710.

here transmission coefficient is the ratio of surface frequency transmitted through that of incident on it which means 97/72 = 0.12710
