A switch has 26 ports each transmitting 30 packets per second. Each packet is 1024 bits. The switch can handle 1.54 mbps.

a) What is the utilization rate for the switch?

b) What is the average number of packets in the queue?

Solution

a) Utilization rate:

Given that 26 ports each transmitting 30 packets per second.

1 packet = 1024 bits

30 packets = 30*1024 = 30724

switch can handle = 1.54mbps = 1540000

Utilization rate = 1540000 /  30724 = 50.123 = 50 %

b) The average number of packets in the queue = 0.50123 / (1-0.50123) = 1.0049
