substance CLAIMA student claims that salt NaCI and sugar CHn
Solution
I disagree with the statement as salt and sugar are not same substances.
Evidence:
Type of bonds: Salt has ionic bonds, whereas sugar possess covalent bonds.
Type of IMFs: Salt has electrostatic attractive forces, whereas sugar possess hydrogen bonding.
Melting points: Salt has 801 °C, whereas sugar (sucrose) has 186 °C.
Scientific reasoning: Although both salt and sugar appears to be white solid, but they have different pysical as well as chemical properties, few of them discussed above. Salt solution conducts electricity due to the presence of hydrated ions Na+(aq) and Cl-(aq), whereas sugar does not show conductivity, but due to presence of polar hydroxyl groups it is soluble in polar solvents like water although it is covalent molecule. Salt (salty) taste is different from sugar (sweet). NaCl is purely ionic compound.
