Solution

In one of my previous assignments, I was working as a manager in a leading public sector bank reporting to the product head of the country. Although, he was an empathetic leader who understood the limitations of his employees in certain situations, he was also the one described in the given case. Someone who believed in setting rules for their sub-ordinates to follow. Any deviation from the given set of procedures and guidelines would lead to his disappointment and would demand to re-do the whole work from the beginning as per his stated rules. We, as employees, always felt constrained under his leadership and could not take independent decisions in our day-to-day functioning. Often the communication between us was one sided where he was dictating work, procedures and deadlines to us without even taking into consideration our viewpoint.

In order to put forward our points across and get work done from him, firstly, we often disagreed to his perspective of looking at problems whenever we believed that he is making a huge mistake and it may have a negative impact on the project or on the whole team. The biggest mistake that sub-ordinates can make while working with autocrat leaders is to agree with everything that the manager has to say and follow every order that the manager makes. Disagreeing with the manager should not be a matter of ego but if you believe that your idea is better than your manager’s idea and if you can substantiate your statement with logic, technical knowledge and desired business outcomes, do not hesitate in making your point. Your manager must be able to comprehend the benefits the project or the team will derive by following your suggested approach.

Secondly, one noticeable characteristic of autocratic bosses is that they always crave for control and power over their team members. As a sub-ordinate you can earn his goodwill by keeping him informed on every significant, insignificant or however minute development in the project or in the competitor landscape or anything else that you feel would feed his craving for attention. By keeping him in information loop all the time, his necessity of attention and control will always be satisfied. In the process, the elevated status that you will earn will provide you with ample of opportunities to put forward your perspective with your boss and get things done from him.
