The condition emphysema results in loss of elastic recoil of the lung tissue. Would this make inspiration or expiration difficult? Explain. Certain chest deformities prevent normal expansion of the chest. Explain why this makes ventilation difficult m terms of pressure and volume. A male patient presents with the following respirators1 volumes and capacities: TV = 500 ml, ERV = 1, 200 ml, IRV = 1, 100 ml. What is this patient\'s VC? Are these values normal? If not, are they more consistent with an obstructive or restrictive disease pattern? Explain.

Solution

Answer= Effects of emphysema on expiration & inspiration

1] Emphysema =

is along term progressive disease of lungs

primararily causes shortness of breath due to overinflamation of the alveoli i.e. air sacs in lungs

in people with emphysema lung tissue involved in exchange of gases (O2& CO2) is destroyed or impaired

Exhalation is slow or stop due to inflation of alveoli

Emphysematous lungs looks like as a old used sponge with a large hole & dramatic loss of springyness or elasticity

When lung is stretched during inflation (Inhalation) the nature of stretched tissue wants to relax to its resting state

in emphysema this elastic function is impaired resulting in air trapping in the lungs

Also affects the small blood vessels & airways that run throughout the lungs

Affected air sacs can not properly filled up with fresh air during inspiration

The condition emphysema results in loss of elastic recoil of the lung tissue. Would this make inspiration or expiration difficult? Explain. Certain chest defor
