2. Given the following two reactions and their equilibrium constant K,=7×109 a. Evaluate the equilibrium constant for the reaction (see discussion): Cu(NH,), (aq) CO,2 (a)CuCO,(s) + 4 NH,(aq) L. 3 concentrations of all dissolved species are present, which is more stable, CuCO, or b. When 1 M Cu(NH,)422 Explain your reasoning.

Solution

b)

Cu(NH3)42+(aq) + CO32-(aq) <------> CuCO3(s) + 4NH3(aq)

K = K2/K1 = 7×109/5×1012= 1.4×10-3

   K = [NH3]4/[Cu(NH3)42+][CO32-] = 1.40×10-3

Reaction quotient is

     Q = [NH3]4/[Cu(NH3)42+][CO32-]

When all the species concentrations are 1M

Q = (1)4/(1)×(1) = 1

Q>K

Therefore,

the equillibrium shift to left. So,Cu(NH3)42+ is more stable.
