A point in rectangular coordinates is given. Convert the point to polar coordinates (-Squareroot 5, Squareroot 5)

Solution

given

point ( x , y) = ( - 5 , 5 )

we know

r^2 = x^2 + y^2 ==> (-5 )^2 + (5)^2 ==> 5 + 5 ==> 10

r = +/- 10

= tan^-1( y/ x)

= tan^-1( 5 / -5 )

= tan^-1( -1 )

= tan^-1( tan(+/4))

= tan^-1( tan(3/4))

= 3/4

It is also possible that r is negative. In this case add/subtract from the found : =7/4.

( r , ) = ( 10 , 3/4 )

( r ,   ) = ( - 10 , 7/4 )
