Solve the logarithmic equation for x. (Enter your answers as a comma-separated list. Round your answer to four decimal places.) In(x - 7) + ln(x + 8) = 1

Solution

We have ln(x-7)+ ln(x+8) = 1 or, ln [(x-7)(x+8)] = 1= ln e . Therefore, (x-7)(x+8) = e or, (x2+x- 56) = e or, x2 +x-(56+e) = 0. Now, on using the quadratic formula, we get x =  [-1±{1 +4*1*(56+e)}]/2 = [-1 ±(1+ 224 +4e)]/2 or, x = [-1± (225+4e)]/2

Note: Here e is Euler\'s number.
