In determining automobile-mileage ratings, it was found that the mpg (X) for a certain model is normally distributed, with a mean of 33 mpg and a standard deviation of 1.7 mpg. Find the following: p(X less than 30) P(28 less than X less than 32 P(X greater than 35) P(X greater than 31) The mileage rating that the upper 5% of cars achieve.Solution
a)The z score is:
z=(x-)/=(30-33)/1.7=-1.76
P(x<30)=P(z<-1.76)=0.0392
b)P(28<x<32)=P(x<32)-P(x<28)
z1=(32-33)/1.7=-0.58
z2=(28-33)/1.7=-2.9
P(z1<-0.58)-P(z2<-2.9)=0.2810-0.0183=0.2627
c)P(x>35)=1-P(x<35)=1-(z<1.76)=0.9608
