STRATEGIC PLAN FOR BAYSIDE HEALTH SYSTEMS

A strategic plan defines an organization’s direction or strategies that have to be adopted in order to achieve a position in the future and determines the resources that should be allocated in order to reach that position in future. A strategic plan is long term in nature.

Stages of developing a Strategic plan

STEP 1

The first in developing a strategic plan is to assess the current situation of the organization

ANALYSIS OF CURRENT SITUATION

Analysis of the current situation deals with the evaluation of BHS’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and the threats that are being faced by BHS.

Strengths

It is found that BHS has implemented the following departments which are acts as the strengths or assets of the organization. BHS possess a lab information system, radiology information system, nursing information system, hospital information system, financial information system and an electronic health record. Also, currently BHS is in an expansion mode of their operational activities by adding offices for the physicians, also the organization had recently added home and occupational health services. However, the existing technical and management systems had not been implemented in these recent expansions in home and occupational health services.

Weakness

Further, BHS do not possess a knowledge based system, order entry or results reporting system, intensive care unit and a data repository.

Opportunities

BHS have to continue developing its home and occupational health services by integrating the existing management and operational systems to these wings. The decision support system which is ready to be implemented will help the organization to make better decisions.

Threats

The threats could be from hospitals and other health services which are better equipped with these facilities.

STEP 2

Secondly, BHS have to identify where the organization is heading to in the future.

Administration of BHS has developed the following business objectives in order to gain competitive advantage in the future. Primarily, BHS aims to improve the quality of health services that are provided to its patients. Secondly, BHS aims to use its resources in a most efficient and effective manner. The third objective is increase market share of health care service provided.

These objectives could be considered as the vision of the organization in order to gain competitive advantage.

STEP 3

Thirdly, BHS have to determine how to reach the desired position or what strategies should be adopted to reach that desired position in future.

The development of a Strategic plan takes place in this stage.

STRATEGIC PLAN FOR BHS

Consider the objectives

1.       Improve quality of care provided to patient

2.       Use hospital resources effectively and efficiently

3.       Increase market share of health care services provided.

How well are the systems in place to meet the objectives?

In order to meet the first objective, the hospital should be well-equipped with all the departments. Technically speaking, it is found that the hospital had implemented various systems such as lab, radiology information system, nursing information system, hospital information system, decision support system, financial information system and an electronic health record. These systems could be utilized for a better decision making by integrating with the Decision Support System. Also, BHS lacks a well-equipped Intensive care unit which may prevent in attracting more patients.

Therefore, BHS should aim for a holistic improvement in all aspects with regard to infrastructure, cleanliness, patient care, efficiency of staff, quality of staff, technological developments. This will equip BHS to provide quality treatment to the patients.

Determine possible projects to ensure the objectives are

Proposed Short-term plan/projects

1.       As an immediate action plan, the hospital has to develop an Intensive care unit to take care of critical patients in need. This should be a short-term goal for BHS that shall be achieved within two to three years.

A well-equipped Intensive care unit would also improve the market share of BHS by attracting more patients who are critically ill. This should be given priority by BHS.

2.       Integrate Health Information System to home health and occupational health wings

This step will help BHS to attract more clients who will be able to access the health services while being at their homes and work place.

Allocation of work

In order to ensure that each phase of the projects is effectively carried out, the works shall be allotted to managerial level employees. For example: Operations manager- 10-20 hours/week, technical manager- 10-20 hours/week.

Daily/weekly reporting

These employees shall be asked to provide daily/weekly reports to monitor the progress of the project.

How can you use technology to prepare for the changes in the community?

In order to effectively manage the changes in the community, BHS should have a knowledge based system. This knowledge based system shall be integrated with the various other systems that are already implemented in BHS. There should be a data repository that will be integrated to store data from various departments and electronic health records. In order to effectively manage the various other systems that are already implemented, a knowledge based system and a data repository has to be integrated with those systems. This will help BHS to achieve its second objective, i.e., to effectively and efficiently use hospital resources.

Also, the work efficiency of the employees should be continuously monitored by way of observation, CCTV cameras, daily or weekly reporting, by conducting performance appraisals etc.

The staff should be given adequate training regarding the use of the technology and evaluation tests should be given after the training.

How will HIM be affected by proposed projects

By implementing a knowledge system and data repository, various other systems will gain their full potential and could be utilized completely and effectively. BHS will be able to take better decisions regarding its action plans, strategies and Health Information Management could be utilized to its full potential too. This will help BHS to gain competitive advantage in terms of technological efficiency and quality care, and improve market share to a large extend.
