An oil tanker has spilled millions of gallons of oil in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Alaska. As a scientist you are aware of a particular strain of algae that possess enzymes that can digest crude oil into a relatively harmless byproduct However, the algae normally live in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Australia and cannot survive in the cooler Pacific Ocean. How might you use recombinant DNA technology to help in the clean up process of the oil spill? Write the steps in the form of flow chart and draw.

Solution

Initially isolate the strain of algae that can decompose oil spills into harmless byproducts in marine environment from Indian off coast then follow the following steps

DNA-recombinant technology to produce transgenic oil spill-decomsing species by isolating gene & by inserting it into \"marine bacterium\" via cloning:

1. Isolation of plasmids & gene to be inserted into the vector: the method of isolation of gene responsible for coding oil spill decomposition can be done via specific plasmid sing restriction endonucleases

2. Restriction endonucleases: these are going to cut specific gene sequences in \"isolated algae\" to generate blunt ends

3. Electrophoration: insertion of gene into the vector followed by host becaterium

4. DNA ligases: ligation of inserted gene into host bacterium gene using DNA ligases through the process of ligation

5. Transformation & cloning: generating number of clones using cell cultures followed by analysis using polymerase chain reaction

These transgenic strains can be spilled on the area of oil-spill occurred in marine region so that the bacterium can decompose oil spill into byproducts
