I am in the midst of writing a grant proposal, however confused. This is what the professor sent me.

As you are inventing your nonprofit I would assume everything is in place (great leadership, decent history, all the legal stuff is done, providing great services etc.) with the exception of the area for which you need funding.

That being said, in the real world a nonprofit might be struggling in multiple areas. Without lying, it would be wise under those circumstances to be rather focused on one funding need in a specific grant proposal. You do not want the potential funder to think that your nonprofit might be \"going out of business\".

Can you help me with some direction?

It will be wise to think about that area that makes your project a successful one. It can be the execution / implementation of project that is the basis to bring success. It can be:

A detailed study is required to select and work upon a particular area as it should be justified by the non-profit organization. Without this, proposal will be questioned by investors.

Besides, area of funding can also be the expansion of Non-profit organization. Though, it requires successful execution of projects in the past. As it builds confidence among investor / funding agencies. It is to be taken care of that funding is not only of monetary resources but also of non-monetary resources.

Further, proposal will also include the realistic projections w.r.t. goals and objectives of the project. It will make clear the future state of organization and funding agencies will understand the proposal in positive manner.
