CHAPTER 11 ONERVOUS SYSTEM Answer the following questions an
Solution
1. Two main divisions of nervous system are central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.
Central nervous system lies along longitudinal axis of body and is formed of brain and spine cord. Peripheral nervous system consists of all the nerves arising from central nervous system.
Peripheral nervous system is further divided into somatic nervous system ad autonomous nervous system.
Somatic nervous system; It is voluntary part of PNS and includes nerves supplying to non visceral organs of body like skeleton muscle cells , bones etc.
Autonomous nervous system; It forms involuntary part of PNS and controls and coordinates involuntary organs like smooth muscles, cardiac muscle, glands. It is also called 80 voluntary or visceral neural system. It is further divided into two types;
1. Sympathetic Nervous system; It is the division of ANS supplying nerves to the smooth muscles of visceral organs to prepare them to meet an emergency.
2.Parasympathetic Nervous system; It is the division of ANS that supplies nerves to visceral organs to perform their daily or vegetative activities.
