A carbon monoxide (CO) detector sounds the alarm when CO levels reach 800 parts per million. Bert and Ernie have decided to use the fireplace in their house even though the landlord told them that it was not safe to do so. Bert lit the fire at 8 pm and the pair fell asleep watching TV on the couch. Around midnight the CO detector went off, but Bert and Ernie did not wake up. At 1:30 am the fire department arrived and removed Bert and Ernie from the house. The fire Department determined that the fire was emitting CO into the house, which increased the concentration by 0.2 parts per thousand per hour.
Calculate the amount of carbon monoxide in the house at 1:30am in ppm. Show Work, and did Bert and Ernie survive?
Solution
the carbon monoxide in the house at 1:30 am is 0.8ppm
explanation: bert lit the fire at 8:pm
and from 8pm to 1:30 am there are around 5:30 hours . for every hour the concentration increases upto 0.0002 ppm.
for hours it would be 0.0010 and 800ppm
if we calculate the whole thing the concentaration of co in the house at 1:30 am is 0.8ppm
Bert and Ernie may be in unconscious state.
