The Scenario:

In response to an unsolicited offer, Exatron Power Delivery and Utility Company purchased 1200 new pickup trucks. The auto manufacturer made an unprecedented offer to the utility company to divest themselves of these vehicles at a bargain basement price. The offer was to sell the vehicles 15% below “Inventory Price”. With certain conditions attached (Listed below).

Sam Gotemwrong, Vice President of Vehicle Operations for Exatron, seen this as a great opportunity to replace Exatron’s aging fleet of utility vehicles. He felt that the “conditions” were acceptable, especially since Exatron’s Motor pools usually fully serviced the company’s vehicles anyway. He also saw an opportunity in the fact that as this “rather large” fleet of vehicles approached future retirement many could be cannibalized before being scrapped, to cheaply maintain an older fleet of back-up vehicles.

Almost immediately, Exatron came under criticism from a strong green energy citizen group. The group had a history of ripping into Exatron for making poor environmental stewardship choices, and also over pollution issues. Now, they were claiming that Exatron had made a poor decision in purchasing “gas hog” vehicles (even though, as pickups, these vehicles were at the top in their mileage class).

With the criticism of Exatron by the Green Group came the criticism of Sam by the board of directors, with the subtle suggestion to “Fix it”.

Sam, in another shot of brilliance, decides that the company could get some very good publicity if the right spin was put on things. The savings the company made in the purchase could be pitched as being passed on to the customers (not to mention the help to a U.S. truck manufacturer). The next target is to form a Six Sigma committee to investigate and implement methods to save on fuel consumption, and if successful these methods might be able to be pitched to the general consumer as best practices for everyone to use.

Vehicles will be serviced by the purchaser.

Manufacturer will only cover parts in the warranty coverage.

After purchaser signs off on delivery the purchaser will not file any complaints about the minor deformations in the vehicles appearance.

Any modifications to the vehicles are the total responsibility of the purchaser.
