A space probe is fired as a projectile from the Earth\'s surface with an initial speed of 1.44 Times 10^4 m/s. What will its speed be when it is very far from the Earth? Ignore atmospheric friction and the rotation of the Earth.

Solution

According to the given prblem,

Using Conservation of energy principal,

K.Ef + P.Ef = K.Ei + P.Ei

1/2 V2 = 1/2 v2 – GME/r

V2 = v2 – 2GME/r

V2 = (1.44 *104)2 – (2)(6.67 *10-11)(5.98 *1024)/6.37*106

V2 = (1.44 *104)2 - (2)(6.67 *10-11)(5.98 *1024)/6.37*106

V2 = 2.0736*108 - (2)(6.67 *10-11)(5.98 *1024)/6.37*106

V2 = 2.0736*108 - 1.25*108 = 8.236 *107

V = 9075.24m/s
