What should a leader do to dispel any notion or misperception that there are in-groups and out-groups in his or her work unit? As a leader, how will you motivate the alienated follower?
Solution
In group has followers with strong social ties to the leader, whereas the out group includes followers with low or no social ties to the leader. The leader can dispel the notion of the existence of in groups and out groups by forming one-on-one relationship with his or her followers. The leader should develop the trust factor amongst all the employees and this will see the development of mutual trust, respect and loyalty of all the followers towards the leader. This will help in removing the notion of in groups and out groups being present in the unit.
Alienated followers can be motivated in the following ways:
(i) the leader can have face to face interaction with such followers. This will reduce the feeling of alienation on part of the follower.
(ii) the leader can allow the alienated follower to provide greater input in the decision making process. This will increase the level of involvement of the alienated follower, and thus his or her motivational level will increase.
