Solve using the elimination method x + 3y = 20 -x + 7y = 40

x + 3y = 20 ----------------------(i)

-x + 7y = 40 ----------------------(ii)

Add equation (i) and equation (ii) , we get

x + 3y -x + 7y = 20 + 40

10 y = 60

y = 6

Substitute the value of y in the equation (i)

we get

x + (3 * 6) = 20

=> x+ 18 = 20

=> x = 20 - 18

=> x = 2

By elimination method , solution for the given system of equation is x =2 and y = 6
