A member of a CDHP has an HSA fund of $500 and a deductible of $1,000 (which has not yet been met), and the HDHP has a 80-20 coinsurance. Calculate the total amount this patient would owe if the bill for their services is $1,800.

Solution

The member would owe a total amount of $660.

The $500 HSA fund would apply towards the $1000 deductible . Hence the patient has to pay only $500 towards deductible

and

as the remaining amount is $800 and he has a 80-20 insurance, he would end up paying $800 * 0.2 = $160 from the remaining amount.

Hence he pays a total of $500 towards deductible and $160 from the remaining amount which amounts to a total of $660.
