Un known erkinElmer Spectrum Version 100301 Wednesday Februa
Solution
The spectrum given above is an FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectrum.
First of all, IR is not generally used to determine the structure of an unknown molecule. It is used to determine the functional groups in a molecule. It measures the vibrations of atoms and based on this,it is possible to determine the functional groups.Generally, stronger bonds and lighter atoms will vibrate at a high stretching freequency.
By interpreting the above spectra, the most important absorption here is the broad band at 3350 cm-1 ,which is corresponding to the O-H group. 3000 cm-1 serves as a boundary line. Aabove this line is observed as higher freequency stretches attributed to sp2 hybridised C-H bonds. Here C-H stretch obtained at 3000 cm-1.Therefore in this spectra, there is a chance of obtaining Benzene. Peaks between 1500-400 cm-1 is finger print regeon.Peaks in this regeon are obtained from complex deformation of the molecules. The two regeons of a spectrum may ovelap to a degree and benzene rings show overtone in the 1500-1700 cm-1 regeon, this arises from complex ring deformations.
