Solution

Components, A, B, C,D and E each with MTBF of
5000,15000,2000,7000 and 12000 hours respectively, using this
method, the MTBF of the system is calculated as:
Lambda A = 4,000,000 / 5,000 = 800
Lambda B = 4,000,000 / 15,000 = 266.6
Lambda C = 4,000,000 / 2000 = 2000
Lambda D = 4,000,000 / 7000 = 571.42
Lambda E = 4,000,000 / 12000 = 333.33
Lambda (composite system) = 800+266.6+2000+571.42+333.33 = 3971.35
MTBF (composite system) = 4,000,000 / 3971.35= 1007 hours
This is a relatively simple example. A system 10\'s or hundreds of
components can be calculated in the same way.
