H = 20 m

d = 5 m

uk = 0.40

K = 4000 N/m

let the maximum distance of the spring compressed is x

Using conservation of energy

m * g * H = 0.5 * k * x^2 + us *m * g * d

8 * 9.8 * 20 = 0.5 * 4000 * x^2 + 0.40 * 8 * 9.8 * 5

solving for x

x = 0.84 m

the maximum distance of the spring compressed is 0.84 m
