Describe the three states of voltage-gated Na+ channels in neurons.
Solution
Three states of voltage gated Na+ channels are;
1.closed activable.
2.Activated (Open and conducting)
3. Closed inactivable.
Each voltage gated Na+ channels has two separate gates; an activation gate and an Inactivation gate. In a resting membrane, the Inactivation gate is open but activation gate is closed and Na+ voltage channel is called closed inactivated. This is the resting state of voltage gated Na+ channels.
At threshold, many voltage gated Na channels suddenly change from the resting state to the activated state; Both the activation and Inactivation gates in channel are open and Na+ moves inward the membrane depolarize further. This is called activated Na + voltage gated channel.
the same depolarization that opens activated gates also closes Inactivation gates. This is called closed and activable state of channel.
