You are running a memory-intensive multimedia application on your computer, which has 1 GB RAM installed. You observe that the computer momentarily stops responding when you switch between two multimedia applications. Your friend suggests upgrading the RAM to 2 GB to correct the performance problems.

Solution

If I am switching between two multimedia application while running memory-intensive multimedia applications then there are two scenarios which need to be discussed. One is whether the system on which this application is running is freezes the applications which are already running but not in use means working mostly on scheduling approach. If yes then the friend is absolutely right because then the reason behind this program to freeze momentarily which is called lagging is because of scheduling algorithms which takes place in the background what happens is that when you switch the application and if there is a shortage of memory then memory used by the current application which is now minimized will be allocated to the application which is resumed, means on which you switched. So increasing the memory(RAM) definitely in that case. But performance does not entirely depend on the RAM.The CPU clock rate matters too. Because suppose you have large size of memory installed on your system but your processors clock rate is really low then there is no significance of using large amount of memory. So if you increase your CPU\'s clock rate then also performance can be increased. There needs to be a proper balance in the CPU clock rate and RAM then performance will be soothing.
