Sub: Work place bullying
Dear Sir:
Good Morning!
I am a victim of work place bullying. I am constantly kept away from tasks and meetings. When called for a meeting I am treated in a humiliating manner and insulted by the group of seniors. All my jobs are micromanagement and I am not allowed to even perform small tasks without picking on me or job done by me.
I am writing this not to ask for your support and intervention in solving the bullying I am facing in this organization. I am repeatedly threatened by job loss in case I voice my opinions. The human resource manager is also a puppet in the hands of management and despite my request for intervention has provided no support.
I have tried to have an amicable discussion with the management at various points to sort out the issues if any they would have with my working style or job profile. The discussion has been hostile and derogatory. They have looked down upon me and now my confidence level has dipped.
I am feeling very harassed and am falling ill frequently due to their unhealthy behavior.
Looking for your support and help.
Warm Regards,
Macbeth

Summary:
Work place bullying is related to various instances during a course of time where person or persons have been harassed and humiliated in the work place. This entire process also known as work place bullying, it is humiliating behavior.
The employee is constantly nagged and impacts the emotional state of the employee. This harassment has long-term impact on the health of the employee. In some cases, the psychological impact is fatal and lead to undermining the confidence of the employee leading to nervous breakdowns and other health ailments.
These toxic people in the workplace can be supervisors or management itself who like to micromanage each task. They go to the extent of installing microphone s and cameras at the desktops to see what employee is doing. The constant supervision creates stress and the analysis made after recording employee behavior is very demeaning.
The equal opportunity employment commission clearly indicates that discrimination on basis of sex, color, age or religion is not allowed and the victim can report it and if justice or change is not visible can file a law suit.
Body:
We will study the types of bullying:
1. Emotional bullying: Impacts the emotional health of the employee. It creates stress and is psychologically damaging to the employee and also his peers who are impacted by management behavior, it can lead to nervous breakdown, anxiety, prolonged illness and some cases suicidal tendencies
2. Physical Bullying: This type of bullying is making the environment difficult for employee by posting him/ her to remote location, it can also be done by making person travel frequently to unknown locales and provide negligible support to the employee
3. Sexual Bullying: Making sexual moves or hints and creates an insecure and unfriendly working environment for the employee. This will reduce the ability of an employee to perform efficiently as a constant psychological pressure of sexual advances can create insecurity and unsafe environment.
Profile of Bullies:
Bullies are normally under confident, egoistic, arrogant and over-ambitious individuals. The behavior of bullies is perpetuated by their need to look superior and in control. They target workers who help other and are old and need work. This behavior makes them feel good about themselves.
Profile of Bullied:
The employees with high integrity, honest trustworthy and ethical are first victims as they are targeted to make them look underperformers in front of other colleagues and peer group.
Surveys indicate 62% of bullies were men and 58% woman. Woman targeted mostly woman in 80% cases. Bullying of the base of race is common basically targeting Hispanics followed by Afro- American and lowest for Asians.
Impact of Bullying:
How to control bullying :
Maintain a Document of incident:
A written record of the behavior of the bully with date, time and place with the incident, in brief, should be maintained by the employee. Each incident should be documented over a period of 3-6 months. The employee should keep a record with himself, give a copy to his supervisor and the human resource department. This documentary evidence will be used when a law suit is required in case the situation escalates and the situation gets out of hand.
Policies of the organization:
Each organization will normally have a policy in place for employee treatment and behavior. It will normally have a detailed brief on how to address sexual bullying. The sexual advances and behavior are taken very seriously. Cases related to racial bullying are also addressed in detail. Unfortunately, bullying behavior and emotional distress is not addressed in policies or rule books. It is assumed that we will all follow basic decorum and know how to behave in a suitable business environment
Investigation and Redressal:
Most organizations have an HR team and a committee which addresses issues of bullying at the work place. The job of the investigator or the committee is to take an unbiased view of the issue of bullying highlighted. Repeat instances can lead to dismissal of the bully. In a case when a bully is part of the management team there is no justice and employee might have to go in for the legal law suit.
Medical Intervention:
The employee should go and meet the health care physician appointed by the organization. This will support his cause when a law suit is filed. The medical practitioner can and will also highlight the instances of other employees from the organization visiting for similar cases of bullying. The bully will get defensive and might get a warning from organization leading to his dismissal or change in his repeat behavior. The redressal might not be effective when the bully is the management itself. This might just back fir and lead to a loss of employment for the employee.
Bully Background
Do backgrounds check of the bully and if he has been a repeat offender the law is on your side. Bullies normally would acquire this behavior to make colleagues uncomfortable and ensure their domination in the organization; they are normally under achievers lasting in their positions only by bullying their colleagues and creating unpleasantness. This de-motivating behavior can lead to good high skilled employees quitting at short notices and the attrition rate is very high.
