Taxon or a group which are having the common ancestor is called Monophyletic Group here Whale and Hippopotamus are Monophyletic . They belongs to the same order Cetartiodactyla.Both are semi aquatic.

Polyphyletic taxon is the group in which there would be no common ancestor. here Horse and Giraffee are polyphyletic with out having a common ancetor.

Paraphyletic group is the one which have resemblance with the monophyletic group but differs in some of the characters . They are placed separately in a clade. Here seal is placed under different clade pinnidae which means that it is paraphyletic.
